Colon Rectal Cancer Surgery
A large variety of colon and rectal cancers are adenocarcinomas. These are cancers of the cells that line the inside of the colon and rectum.

Treatment options for Colon Rectal cancer

Treatment plan is decided by the doctors depending on the stage of the tumour in Colon-rectal region. How far it has spread or how deeply it is affecting the intestinal wall and other tissues. Treatment is also determined by the patient's age, medical history, overall health, and tolerance for specific medications and therapies. In the initial stages surgery is a viable option.

Colon Rectal Surgery

Bowel Resection - is a treatment for colorectal cancer where the tumor and nearby parts of the colon, or rectum, are removed. This procedure can also be used to treat other bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, or to remove something blocking the bowel.

Partial colectomy or Partial Bowel Resection

The tumor and normal tissue on either side of the diseased area in the colon are removed. The surgeon then rejoins the healthy portions of the colon. If feasible teh surgeon may create a temporary colostomy, or an opening for solid waste from the bowel to a special bag that patient wears outside the body till such time the healthy tissue in the colon has healed.

There are two surgical options when you are facing a partial colectomy. An open colectomy involves a large abdominal incision, while a laparoscopic colectomy involves a number of small incisions through which a small camera and special surgical tools are used to perform the surgery.

Laparoscopic Surgery or Keyhole Surgery

Laparoscope is a small surgery instruments with an inbuilt video camera which is inserted into the abdomen through small (usually less than 2 inches) incisions made in the abdominal wall. The surgeon observes the images of the colon on a colour monitor screen and can surgically remove sections of the bowel and adjacent tissue which are affected by cancer.

What to Expect After Surgery

You will start on a liquid diet and progress slowly to solid foods as you can tolerate them. You will not be discharged until you have regained bowel function. Since your healthy colon tissue has been rejoined, you should be able to go to the bathroom as normal.

The Hospital Stay

The average hospital stay ranges from four days to one week, depending on your progress and any potential complications. Full recovery will take approximately six to eight weeks.
