Many Cancer Deaths Prevented by Colonoscopy Polyp Removal During Colonoscopy Shown to Cut Colon Cancer Deaths in Half

New research shows that colonoscopy saves lives not only by
identifying colon cancers early, but also by detecting and removing
colon polyps in their precancerous stage.

Removal of the tumor-like growths known as adenomatous polyps was
associated with a 50% reduction in expected colon cancer deaths in the
largest and longest follow-up of polyp patients ever conducted.

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the study confirms
what has long been suspected, says researcher Ann G. Zauber, PhD, a
biostatistician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York
City.

“You would expect to reduce deaths from colorectal cancer when you
remove the adenomas that cause them, but we really haven’t had the
data to prove it until now,” she says, adding that the findings
support current colorectal cancer screening recommendations.

Breast cancer treatments cut later risks, study indicates

Treating early Breast Cancers with radiation and drugs, in addition to removing part of the breast itself, significantly decreases the risk of developing a more invasive form of cancer 15 years later, according to a new Stanford University study.

Breast cancer experts said the study should be reassuring to women who are diagnosed with early breast cancer, in the sense that their long-term outlook is very good with all three treatments.
But some patient advocates say that regardless of the treatment, such a woman’s chances of dying from invasive breast cancer later are small. Only about 5 percent of women who were studied died of breast cancer, suggesting that such early cancers are being overtreated.
